Chaplains and Re-Entry
Yes, Chaplains play a vital role in our correctional settings. In this year’s conference Re-Entry will be the focal point. Chaplains sometimes wear may hats in their day to day service to this community. However, we sometimes become consumed with the daily demands of Services, Class’s, Holy Day Observances, Personal Counseling, and Grief and Loss notifications and support. We also have the duty to continue to offer Faith, Hope and Purpose to this community. This conference has been designed to help the Chaplain understand the difficulties that Re-Entrants may or will face in their walk of freedom. The Re-Entry Simulator has been designed and offered through out the PA Department of Corrections system to give a life like simulation of situations and obstacles that Re-Entrants have had to face upon release. This simulator will give each participant a better real-world experience that most Chaplains have not had to face. In this the intended effect is to help better equip Chaplains with opportunities to develop a more realistic understanding of how they may offer guidance and support to those in their care prior to their release. As the Conference moves on we will utilize speakers who are on the frontlines of Re-entry in the hopes that each Chaplain will be able to incorporate a new appreciation for the challenges those in our care may face upon release. This years goal is to inform and bring to light another vital role of the Chaplain in order to give each Re-Entrant the ability to become successful and productive in the next phase of their lives.
