Chaplaincy –
An Essential Role in Public Safety
Chaplains are crucial in achieving public safety, yet their role is often overlooked and underutilized in strategic planning. During this conference, we will cast a bigger picture that allows chaplains to see how their work fits into the public safety mission, and how they can model global best practices for other corrections professionals to follow.
We will examine the chaplain’s role in two of the most pressing issues in corrections today: staff wellbeing and desistance theory. Participants will gain a better understanding of the factors that typically lead to poor physical and mental outcomes among our workforce, and how they can better care for themselves. We will also work toward a broader understanding of what typically makes an inmate move away from the criminal mindset and identity. Further attention will be given to the centrality of chaplaincy in fostering a prison environment where virtues are developed and practiced, and how to encourage a sustained prosocial mentality after release.

SpeakersDr. Kristi Miller Anderson has worked in the prison system in various capacities including chaplaincy, education, reentry, mental health, and as assistant warden. Her corrections experience also includes national prison reform efforts. She worked alongside the famed former Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary) Warden, Burl Cain, in more than 18 state corrections departments to help implement Cain’s prison seminary model for moral rehabilitation. Later, in her role with Fourth Purpose Foundation, Kristi developed resources to elevate the image, professionalism, and wellbeing of the corrections workforce. She continues to research and disseminate global best practices in corrections through video content, articles, panels, and presentations. Kristi has authored three books, the Hannah’s Gift series, to give hope and encouragement to incarcerated women in their role as mothers. Kristi has multiple graduate degrees in theology/biblical studies and is a board certified psychiatric mental health RN.
